Being With What IS
The goal of process coaching is to give my clients the space to express their emotions and the opportunity to experience and take ownership of their whole life.
Folks often avoid the highs and lows of strong emotions which are parts of living.
They are looking for a safe and comfortable middle with no big swings up or down. However, this is a misguided form of self-protection; Protection from pain or just avoiding strong emotions in either direction.
This is an unhealthy alternative. When we suppress how we feel, we have a major risk factor for illness. Neuroscience and psychology have now long established the link between our emotions and our mental and physiological health.
Why is Processing emotions important?
Processing emotions is a tool that helps clients find the way back to experience the richness and fullness of their whole life in every moment. Process coaching is about being with my clients wherever they are in their lives at the moment.
Imagine that life is like a river, a comparison from Taoism. Things are smoothly flowing one day and then a rock appears in our path. A big one that, at first glance, we can’t move around. Or we get stuck in the mud and can’t move. Or we flow into an area of intense white water. In any of those moments, we don’t get to say, “I think I’ll step out of the river now…I don’t like this”. We don’t get to say, “I’d like to be in the other kind of river please, the smoothly flowing one”. We just get to stay present, and be in the river with whatever is present with us at the moment.[1]
What is important about BEING WITH your present emotions?
When people do not want to be present to what they are experiencing, their energy becomes trapped or stuck. In addition to causing all kinds of physical challenges and illnesses , stuck energy cannot be used. But when clients are able to be fully present with what they are experiencing, that stuck energy is released and can be leveraged or used to fuel forward action, vision and new possibilities.
When the coach witnesses where you are as a client in the moment and what is going on for you, without avoiding it, several different things happen.
First, you feel known. Another human being sees your experience and this is incredibly empowering.
Secondly, when you become connected to yourself, to what is truly going on in the moment, that alone is transformative.
Embodiment : Working with the body and emotions
We all have a limited amount of the 3 resources: Time, Energy and Money.
When you don’t know how to prioritize and say no, your body will say it for you in terms of illness or some kind of symptom.
In coaching I help you to learn how to prioritize yourself.
We ask what is your body saying no to?
I also train you in making a habit of asking yourself:
- What do I need to say no to?
- What do I need to say yes to?
- What I cannot be with?
Emotion: Energy in Motion
How to process emotions?
We hear the emotion and we NAME IT , we bring awareness to it, the client gets aware of it in the NOW, in the present moment. Then as a coach I encourage you, the client, to experience the emotion and include it. This inclusion of the emotion allows a shift to happen and awareness expands. The client integrates the new awareness and new energy becomes available to her or him. They create from this new energy and move on.
As you move forward, including your experience, and not shying away from it, you get to relax and open up to the whole range of your life and new possibilities.
So from the pool of available emotions, the clients walk out with new awareness, energy, and resources.
How Long Does it Take to Process Emotions?
There is no specific time frame. It could take one session or several sessions. The client will shift when they are ready to.
